The current state of affairs in the middle east has an effect on everyone concerned. I would like to hear your views about the situation unfolding and any suggestions on how to attain peace in the region. Whatever your background, creed, colour or beliefs……. please lets have your views. 8 Comments » Hello, I live in Egypt, a pounding heart in the middle of the Middle East. Though there aren’t direct conflicts between the country and Israel or else, the current conflicts in the region definitely cause issues. Couple that with the heavy corruption taking place inside, you get a poorly-managed country, that is not the great civilization it used to be anymore. The majority of the Egyptians are illetrate, and officially poor. And those who are educated do not get their chances as it’s supposed to be. Only those who are powerful enough get all things. This ‘powerfulness’ here is defined as: “illegal and unjust ways to get what you don’t deserve, and to steal others’ efforts”. “I’ve got this job through my uncle” and the like are very common statements in Egypt. If you’re a hardworker, and intelligent, it’s very unlikely to get what you deserve. Doctors are paid 10 times less than army soldiers and officers, because the latter protect those who-we-don’t-speak-of, while it won’t much matter if people die from insufficient medical care. I live in Belgium…so far away from those crisis and yet so close to it. I believe that all the people around Israel should leave Israel alone. It has been so much blood spilled and at some point those people don’t know anymore for what they are fighting for. If one starts a fight for the most stupid reason, there comes the crowd to fight too… Because of them all the innocent people are sentenced to suffer great pain and losses…and those innocent people wish nothing but a decent life and peace around them. For once, all people should raise their voices and say :Enough! Because it is enough.

Hello Sir, I actually wrote alot about my point of view at my blog I said this war is not about soldiers, and It’s a long-term war, which will bring disasters to everybody, and nobody will be safe. I wish that we can unite to stop this war. Besides, nobody will “win” the war, neither Hezbollah will be eliminated, nor Israel will follow Hezbollah’s conditions. Thanks, Abed. Hamdan Palestinian

Hi, Firstly; well done for trying to encourage discussion. That’s exactly what is needed. I was born in Israel, though I now live in London. I have a lot of family over there, including my grandmother and my father. I visit regularly (hopefully I will be travelling there this August). I can’t now go through EVERYthing I think about the crisis – doing that has taken up more than a few pages at my blog! However, in general I think that, as with many things in that area of the Middle East, it largely boils down to the unresolved conflict with the Palestinians, and that this in turn is largely due to Israel being unwilling to negotiate a peace. More specifically about this crisis, both Hamas and Hizbullah were wrong to kidnap soldiers (which is a war crime), and Hizbullah’s actions in firing rockets at Israeli civilians are disgraceful. Their demand for the release of prisoners is, however, completely legitimate. Israel has responded completely disproportionately, and is engaging in a war of aggression not one of defence. It is openly waging war on the civilian population of Lebanon, and has committed numerous war crimes. Israel obviously has wider aims in this conflict, wider than weakening Hizbullah, that’s for sure. The international community has shown again how weak and compromised it is. The US and UK have backed Israeli war crimes and are complicit in them, and the rest of the community have been blocked from acting by the all-powerful US veto. A ceasefire is the only way out, and the only way to stop it from happening again is for Israel to engage in serious negotiations with the Palestinians for a just settlement.

What is going on in the middle east is uncalled for. I will agree that Israel like any other country has the right to defend themselves. But when the death toll adds up to a handful of terrorists and 10 times that amount is civilians, and in Lebannon alone one-third of the deaths are children. To me that is deliberate and needs to stop. I feel the same about the other side too. They need to stop the killing and find a civilized way to settle their differences. I am an American and right now my heart is with Palestine and Lebanon. I cannot defend Israel.

As the human carnage continues, how about the August 1-6 Int’l Read For Peace Week (http://www.readingspree.com) which offers hope by encouraging individuals around the world to read a nonviolent book for at least one hour with family, friends, colleagues, neighbors in demonstration of the their hope, commitment to peace around the world, especially in the Middle East? It also encourages co-authoring of books by Indians and Pakistanis, Israelis and Lebanese, and translation and donation of nonviolent books to people in that part of the world.

  3. HI 🙂

You ask me for a comment. Here’s my comment:

Almost everydays we’re informed by the medias about horrifics things happend accross the World but the most revolting of them was the ones caused by human being against the others: attacks from Terrorists groups, war in Irak, genocide in Darfour, and now the war in the Middle East between Israël and their neighbors (Lebanese and Palestinians poeple: which included pacific poeple AND War Mongers such as Hebzhollah [The God’s Party] or other groups)…

For a normal person, the first reaction in such situation is to sympathised with the victims and be angry against the attackers. That’s fine but not enough…

Who’s right? Who’s wrong? These questions and their answers drive us into the same “game” of killing and revenge. Every part of this conflict can shows us their victims and ask us to be part or their revenge. This perpetuate the problem and never stop killings, making many others innocent victims.

About the fighter of each side we can say :

«The plague on both your houses» [W. Shakespeare]

We have to be part of the solution not the problem. And we have to help “part of the solution” poeple on both side in the conflict. This is a very unconfortable situation but this is the only way to get out this “vendetta’s logic”.

In the Middle East conflict, which is mainly the conflict between Israël and the Palestinians (with many externals fighters using this conflict for theirs own purpose and political agendas including Americans and Iranians for example), the poeples in power (the ones who have the weapons and used them) are the main responsible for this situation. The poeple who play their game too…

No ones of them accept the existence of the other and nobody of them recongnized that their fight will never reach a “Total victory” against their opponents. Never. The only way to get out of this situation is to stop killings others, accept compromised and talk to the other part of the conflict to sign an agreement based on cease of fire and compromised. Any total victory is excluded for any part in this conflict.

When we see the tears of mothers in South Lebanon, these tears are real and we cried with them.
But when we see tears in the faces of the fighters and war mongers be sure that these tears are what we called in french : “des larmes de crocodiles”:
crocodile tears… We don’t believed they care of these victims but they used them for their purposes.

The question is not who is wrong – who is right but: How to set up a compromised solution between us with the objective of living in peace?

The only way to sympatised with the victims past and present from all parts, (all victims are equal), we must encourage every pacific poeple of both side to take the power, stop fire and start to negociate to reach a compromised solution.

Who can say that he did not know that it’s the only solution?

“The ink of the scientists is more invaluable than the blood of the martyrs”

    Peace!
    🙂

  4. This war is for lebaneses ,a war of independance, they dont want USA involving in their politics ,they want their land free of all occupation, and they want back their prisoners of war.

For americans ,it is a war of expansion, they want to secure Lebanon as a military base like Iraq now,to then march on Syria when their project has been implemented in Lebanon, and in Iraq, move alltogether toward Iran, this will not be the new or big middle east but,the new America in this region, energy will not only be cheap but free, and people there should change their culture and way of life into an american one ,this is the american definiton of peace.

For other arabs, this war is a war for identity, you should fight to stay alive as you are and hold your identity and presence, victory means holding its identity.

All parties groups, millitants, societies, involved to fight against this american project ,are considered terrorists, and the countries which refuse it will be considered as non-democratic ,and should be punished economically or removed by force.

  8. i think that the Isreali people/government are not a peace loving group at all. they have the money to do what ever they want and this shows in the politics of the U S and other nations of the world if the JEWISH people wanted peace it would be an easy task DOesnt thier religon teach LOVE? YOU do not go to a neighbors house with a gun to settle an argument!you discuss it as the bible tells us. the government of isreal cannot justify any of thier aggressive behaviour. all that happens when you fight with a bigger weapon more people get hurt and what money does is buy bigger weapons. as history tells us is that the winner of all wars is the righteous ones, what a fucking joke. Isreal can win but what are they winning. GOD will let them know! MONEY is the root of all evil, too bad the fucking jews dont realize this FACT and let thier neighbors live in peace. Kill one family member and you have the hatred of a lifetime. too bad the only way for a poor people to fight back is by suicide on innocent victoms wouldn,t it be a mess if the palestinians had money!! probubaly would not be so many civilian casulties they would show more class than thier apponents for sure, but as the great U S of FUCKING A would say who gives a fuck about poor people.
